My husband's parents are Greek and we celebrated Easter today with his family. Not the roast lamb on a spit in the back yard that you might imagine, but we did have a big family celebration which involved a great deal of eating. If you haven't ever seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding, you should, it's a frighteningly accurate representation of Greek life - there are so many cousins, aunts and uncles I lose count, many of whom share the same name. But they are without doubt the friendliest, kindest bunch you could meet.
One tradition in my husband's household is dyeing eggs scarlet to signify the blood of Christ. The eggs are hard boiled and distributed around the table, we rap them against everyone else's eggs and the owner of the last uncracked egg is considered lucky.
Christos Anasti!
Happy Greek Easter to you! Those eggs are perfect for the macro photography challenge- they look so pretty up close.

I love hearing about everyone's different traditions. Your Big Fat Greek Easter sounds like a great celebration. Far less commercial than Easter Bunnies and chocolate eggs!!
Great photo :)

Fantastic colored eggs! I loved hearing about your celebration. Much more intestesting than candy candy candy- which is what we do. I have seen the movie and I liked it alot. I bet that it is never dull in a family like that.

So, who was the lucky eggcracker? They look really beautiful. What are they dyed with?

My Mom's family is Ukranian and we do the egg cracking thing too, but not just scarlet eggs, all colors. My Grandpa always seemed to be the one that won, but I think he cheated ;)
Happy Easter!

How in the world did you get your eggs this gorgeous color!? Beets? It's interesting that you would dye them this color to symbolize the blood of Christ. I have never heard of that before, but it totally makes sense.

We find that only the greek dye (from the greek stores) dye the eggs really red. It's the strongest and nothing else works!
