I haven't been to my (yes, it is mine) thrift store for a while, but today I had an overwhelming urge to visit. So I went and I found this beauty. For the princely sum of $4.99.
Apart from one easily fixable little tear, it's in perfect condition. I have had my eye out on blanket like this for the past few years, but most of them I've come across have been nasty colour combinations, worn out or just too expensive.
When I look at all those tiny squares and how much love and effort went it to it, I think it's maker would be happy to know that it's now with someone who appreciates all the hard work.
It's like a Klimt painting - I saw it in your Flickr stream and thought 'WOW - she's been busy'. Turns out you've been savvy too!

You grabbed a real bargin there!!!
I'm a crocheter and like you stated there is so much work that goes into a blanket like that - it makes me sad that it would even be in a thrift store :-(
I think the maker would love the fact that it has ened up in a home of appreciation.
Great find -

What a total find! I glance at the afghans every time I go to my store but so far not as lucky as this!

That is one huge blanket! congratulations... awesome find. I just love to think of the person who sat quietly crocheting all the squares while life swirled about them. What were they watching? listening too? were they in a busy family or on the porch by themselves?? So many stories for $5!

$4.99?!?! What a great bargain!
Like you, I often "rescue" treasures such as this blanket. I do believe the makers would be happy knowing that their creation is appreciated.

Absolutely gorgeous - and we know you're going to give it the love it deserves. You do realise you've probably used up 5 years of thrift shop karma though?!

What a beauty!
I'm still looking for yarn to mend the granny square blanket made by my great-grandmother. Not actually sure how to mend the blanket, though - I'm guessing I have to redo the square then sew it in?

Yes, it does look rather like a Klimt doesn't it? Can't crochet unfortunately...but am excellent at appreciating someone else's hard work!

I have seen many too, but this was by far the best one I've ever seen. It was totally underpriced too, they normally go for at least $20!

Thanks Rachel, it really isn't that big - a good lap size I'd say, but the squares are teeny weeny!

I really hope not!
