I'm turning 40 this year and I'm suddenly feeling a bit middle aged. So I'm using a free C25K podcast to build myself up to running 5K again. Or should I say jogging. I'm not an athlete and I'm horribly out of shape, but I have (pre children) run two half marathons, so I know that it's entirely possible. My new year's resolution is not to compete in a race necessarily, but simply to get fitter, stronger and a little less wobbly in the thigh department. This week I went for my second run with a friend outside at -14C wearing hubby's yaktrax to stop any spectacular slidey ice wipeouts. So far so good!
Snap! On the turning 40 this year and wibbly bits, but as of yet I still can't seem to find the time to trim them down.....just yet. Thoooough - my youngest starts school in September so no more excuses for me.
Good luck with everything though -14 'phew' I can barely manage around 5 degrees.
take care,
Nina xxx

You are obviously determined to do this if you are prepared to run in -14C ... I'm sure you'll be running like the wind come the better weather!

Wow I'm impressed...-14 and on ice! If you can jog in those conditions then you can't be stopped :o)

Another snap here. All hats off to you with the trainers and their use. I'm such an appalling lazy bones. Minus 14. Really? That is some serious stroicism.

-14, berlimey. I couldn't run before I had children or before I turned 40 so you're 2 up on me already. I can, however, JustDance on the Wii with the best of them. Bring it on!

Hats off to you! I was determined to hit 40 without the extra poundage I had been carrying - it was a really good incentive. Not sure I'm up for running though - I am hideously unfit.

-14, wow, you wouldn't see me out in those temperatures!! That thing you put on your trainers looks rather nifty!

Now you've made me feel guilty for complaining about running in the 80 plus weather we've been having...
By 'running', I do mean a fair amount of walking, too. My local pool is closed for refurbishment. I think I should probably keep to just swimming when it reopens...

I'm joining you Lina! I have been out for my first two week 1 runs and found the second easier than the first which was encouraging. It's still bleep hard work - I have NEVER been fit so I have 40 years of sedentary living to change! But I think, with the structure of the podcasts, I might actually stand a chance of being able to run - if I can get over how much my shins hurt!!

Bravo Lucy! Well done. I suffer from shin splints too - I found it better to run on the grass for a while (although there's none here a the moment). Once you get used to it you can start to gradually run on the road or pavement!

I'd rather run in the cold to be honest.(although preferably not at -14C) I find running in heat pretty unbearable, I turn purple and wheezy in hot weather when I run!

I took up running between child 1 and child 2 and was a bit fitter for the only time in my life. After the first few months of agony I nearly enjoyed it!
If you can do it in -14 you are certainly going to stick at it.

Thanks Lina - Mr Locket keeps telling me to run on the grass too but I like to actually GET somewhere rather than running round a field. I'll have to give it a try though and see if it makes it better. My shins weren't quite so painful after my last run. Lucy x
